A differentiated Indigenous energy-storage use case opened the door to Canadian market opportunities

    Company Description

VisBlue provides water-based vanadium flow battery technology for energy storage. In Canada, the most relevant opportunity was in facilities on First Nations land where backup power and energy sovereignty were priorities, but fire and explosion risk made standard lithium battery systems less attractive.

    Challenge

VisBlue wanted to grow in Canada, but the technology faced a pricing challenge against lower-cost lithium batteries, especially lower-cost imports. To compete effectively, the company needed a specific use case where its differentiated value mattered more than upfront price. It also needed the right Indigenous partners and community pathways to access the market.

    What We Did

ClimateDoor identified a high-value use case for VisBlue’s technology in band offices and cultural centres on First Nations land, where communities wanted backup power and energy sovereignty without the fire and explosion concerns associated with standard lithium batteries. We matched VisBlue with an Indigenous distributor of clean energy technology and also made two matches to Indigenous communities. This created an entry pathway into multiple opportunities in Canada.

    Impact

    • Matched with an Indigenous distributor of clean energy technology
    • Matched with two Indigenous communities
    • Identified a differentiated use case in First Nations facilities
    • Positioned the technology around safety, backup power, and energy sovereignty
    • Opened multiple opportunities in Canada

    Outcome

VisBlue moved from a difficult price-competition position to a clearer Canadian market strategy built around a high-value use case, Indigenous distribution, and direct community relationships. That positioning created a credible pathway for growth in multiple Canadian opportunities.
